Employee Surveys Are Key In Running A Business

Understand Your Workers

Employee surveys, like customer surveys, are two sides to the same coin. When running a good business, you have to pay attention to both sides. One half - a really, big, really important half - of the equation is measuring the mood and temperament of your workforce. A good manager will have some idea as to the general mood of his or her workers, but there's always room for error. A manager can actually inquire as to his or her workers' moods, but it will always be impossible to know if you're getting the real, unbiased truth. A better way to get real answers is via employee surveys. Employee surveys allow managers and company owners to conduct status updates on their employees without subjecting them to the pressure of a performance review or a one on one interview.

The key here is anonymity. When you run employee surveys, the participants can remain anonymous. When you have anonymity, you are far more likely to get real answers. Real answers may not be the most pleasant, but they are the most useful. Anyone - even the best worker - will feel a bit awkward giving an honest account of the business to his or her manager. There's always the worry that untoward words will offend or, even worse, result in being laid off or fired. As a good manager, you would never do that, but the fear still exists and that can color the results of a one on one interview.

Anonymous employee surveys are better. They allow employees to give their real thoughts without fear of reprisal. The truth may be difficult to handle, but without it you're just going to be floundering around, and business will suffer. The truth will truly set you free.
