Mean

The average (arithmetic mean) of the responses for all question types but 'Rate different items along the scale of your choice' is calculated as follows:

  1. The row consists of the values assigned to the answers. Each value is taken as many times as there are responses to each answer. The values are summed up.
    Note that by default the values are set to the answers accordingly to their sequence number.
  2. The sum is divided by the total number of responses.

The values 1, 2, 3 are assigned to the answer choices 'Pop', 'Rock' and 'Jazz' for the 'Pick one' question. The 'Pop' answer has 2 responses, 'Rock' - 1 response, and 'Jazz' - 4 responses. The total number of responses is 7. According to the calculation rules: Sum = 1+1+2+3+3+3+3=16 and Mean = 16/7=2.286

  1. The number of responses to the rated object is summed up.
  2. The value obtained on step 1 is divided by the number of scales.

In the rated object 'Tea' the 'Always' scale was selected 8 times, 'Often' - 3, 'Sometimes' - 5, 'Rarely' - 2. The number of scales is 4. According to the calculation rules: Sum = 8+3+5+2=18 and Mean = 18/4 = 4.5. Mean for the 'Coffee' and 'Coca Cola' rated objects is 3.75 and 4 correspondingly.
